Mindfulness

Mindfulness is widely known as a way of being that promotes peace of mind, clarity and general wellbeing. We’ve seen a ‘mindfulness boom’ lately with vast numbers of tutors, courses and resources available online. This is all hugely positive, but in truth there are hardly any resources freely available for deaf people and – in particular – for those who use British Sign Language.

Back in 2009 I was working for West Bromwich’s YMCA as their Healthy Living Coordinator for Deaf/Hard of hearing people. My role consisted of ensuring the centres wellbeing services were accessible to the deaf community, training staff and then working with deaf clients to share information and awareness of wellbeing activities.

It was in this role that I was offered the initial training with Mindfulness Scotland to become a Mindfulness Practitioner. They had never worked with a deaf person before and the 6 week course and tutor training/retreat were learning curves for us all. I am very grateful for the positive impact Mindfulness has had on my life and I thoroughly enjoy sharing what I have learnt with others.

After completing my training, I began teaching Mindfulness Based Approaches to individuals and groups across the country in various settings. These included NHS pain management groups, wellbeing courses at community centres and for private companies too. I have tailored courses for individuals, small groups and offered bespoke workshops for organisations ‘training days.’

I use both spoken English and British Sign Language so that both hearing and deaf people are able to access courses and workshops and follow guided meditations with ease.

As a trained professional relaxation therapist I specialise in delivering Mindfulness sessions for stress relief and relaxation and I have a specific interest in the benefits of Mindfulness on those who experience anxiety and/or panic and I continue to develop my CPD as I research Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Neurolinguistic Programming methods and Emotional Freedom Technique.

If you are interested in booking a mindfulness workshop or course, please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss your requirements or what you’d like to get out of the session. I offer video tuition (in BSL and/or spoken English) for you to access from the comfort of your home!
